HINGHAM SYMPHONY ANNOUNCES ITS NEW NAME:
THE ATLANTIC SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: South Shore in Concert
The professional orchestra known as the Hingham Symphony Orchestra (HSO) for the past 10 years, under music director and conductor Jin Kim, has been renamed the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra.

The new name for the regional orchestra was announced at the season-ending Saturday night (April 28) Pops Concert at F1 in Braintree. Including its tagline, it will enter its 11th season in the fall of 2007 with the full designation of the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra: South Shore in Concert.

The HSO, which had its origins more than a half-century ago as the Hingham Civic Orchestra, has served as the South Shore’s regional professional orchestra since 1997. It currently performs concerts and educational programs in venues throughout the area south of Boston including the new Duxbury Performing Arts Center, Derby Academy’s Larson Hall, and Boston’s Jordan Hall. It attracts both seasoned professional performers and younger players who come from around the world to study in the Boston area’s rich musical community. Their performance of Beethoven’s 9th symphony with full orchestra, chorus and world-renowned soloists drew enthusiastic reviews from over 600 audience members in March.

The year-long process of choosing a name involved significant input from the audience, HSO corporate and individual supporters, and musicians. In selecting the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra: South Shore in Concert, the 11-member HSO board of directors aimed to align the ensemble’s name with its current regional role, and to set the stage for further growth under its dynamic young conductor. Said managing director Nina Wellford of the board’s choice of Atlantic Symphony Orchestra: “This name feels just right. Like the music we play, it’s timeless. It has breadth and depth and infinite moods. It’s ‘our’ ocean here on the shore south of Boston, and it connects us to the greater world of musicians and music that define this orchestra.”

At the Pops Concert on Saturday night, Jin Kim was recognized for his 10 years of tremendous service to the orchestra. He graciously accepted words of praise from current and former Board presidents Cammie Markley, Turner Bledsoe and Nino Catalano, principal oboe Andrew Price, and Ms. Wellford, before offering his gratitude for the opportunity to work with so many dedicated people to meet the challenge of growing an orchestra in the region.
